"Yael Yuzon and Gosh Dilay were classmates in highschool who wrote songs during their free time. After a while, they decided to form a band called Sponge along with co-actors from a local theatre production Vicente Lava (Guitars), Ryan Teehankee(Drums) and Datu Pendatun (Percussions). They played their first gig on November 2001 at the Poveda Fair. They would then go on to win the Holy Spirit battle of the bands and the Ateneo high school battle of the bands 2002. During the summer of 2002, what seemed to be the perfect lineup had to go through another roster change. Teehankee and Lava were replaced by Chris Cantada and Erwin Armovit respectively. Later that same summer, Pendatun left for UP Baguio, leaving the band without a percussionist. With Erwin on guitars and Chris on drums, the band decided to change its name to Sponge Cola.

Chirs' affinity with the Beatles and Erwin’s taste for aggressive, stabbing guitars served as the blue print for the revamped sound of Sponge Cola. With a new name and a new set of members, they’ve come a long way from being just another pop rock group. Their ability to blend their influences together has generated enough interest for the production of their debut EP which will come out June 2003.
